Speeding and distracted driving tickets were down in Saskatoon in 2020, but some infractions were on the rise.
The Saskatoon Traffic Unit’s 2020 report shows a total of 7094 speeding offenses, down nearly 46% from the year before. Distracted driving tickets in the city were down more than a thousand tickets in 2020 as there were 1770 offenses issued in the pandemic year.
Summary offense tickets as a whole were down over to 19,303. Representing a drop of over 9000 from 2019.
An offense that did go up in 2020 was the number of red-lights ran. 684 tickets were issued as opposed to 621 in 2019.
Meanwhile racing, stunting and excessive noise tickets were on the rise. Saskatoon police attribute this to “car rallies” and report gatherings in parking lots often led to these violations occurring. The traffic unit says it is considering additional plans for air support and patrols, to help disrupt these kinds of dangerous activities in 2021.
