The Saskatoon Police Service says it made considerable progress in several areas during its Year-End Update.
The 2020 Business plan laid out specific areas to watch when it came to crime in the city. The year end report, presented to the Board of Police Commissioners, states it was difficult to isolate trends in 2020 due to the pandemic but compared to 2019 there was improvement in crimes against property, downtown crime incidents, core neighbourhood crime and traffic collisions. Domestic disturbance calls were marked as “needs improvement” during the pandemic year. The report reminds COVID-19 had an impact, especially in traffic collisions with less people on the roads, and domestic disturbances, with more people isolating in their homes.
Police report a higher rate of clearance rates, or charges being laid after property crimes and violent crimes were committed in 2020. For charges related to violent crimes clearance rates were up 23% in 2020 over the 5 year average.
