There are two more COVID-19 vaccines in the mix.
Health Canada has authorized the AstraZeneca vaccine developed in partnership with Oxford University and the Serum Institute of India’s version of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
They are authorized for use in people over 18 and like the two vaccines we already have, Moderna and Pfizer, you need two doses.
Unlike the Pfizer vaccine which needs to be stored at ultra cold temperatures, the AstraZeneca vaccines need to be refrigerated at 2 to 8 degrees and can last for at least six month.
Here is the rundown from the federal government on when we can expect the AstraZeneca vaccines to begin arriving in Canada.
Minister of Public Services and Procurements, Anita Anand, says the first 500,000 of 2-million doses of the vaccine from the Serum Institute of India will be delivered in the coming weeks to then be distributed to the provinces and territories.
The remaining 1.5-million will arrive by mid-May.
That’s in addiction to the 20-million already secured through an earlier agreement with AstraZeneca.
Anand says now that Health Canada has approved the vaccine, the federal government can finalize delivery schedules for the other 20-million doses.
