The structure of families has changed and that’s where new legislation from the provincial government comes in to play, effective Monday.
The new Act updates parentage provisions that take into account things like assisted reproduction, surrogacy, and having more than two parents.
Justice Minister Gord Wyant says the changes are based on recommendations made by the Law Reform Commission of Saskatchewan, which ensures modern family relationships are better reflected in family law.
The legislation also revises the best interests of a child criteria to better factor in the impact of family violence when looking at parenting time, decision-making responsibilities, relocations and other issues.
Also beginning today, couples in Regina thinking about divorce will have to go through a mediation process before heading to court.
The provincial government announced earlier this month that the goal is to keep people from having to go to court.
In January of last year, Prince Albert became the first city to have the mandatory mediation and it has now been expanded to Regina.
