A petition from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation has been delivered to the federal government calling for putting an end to the policy that allows former governors general to continue billing their expenses once they have stepped down.
CTF Federal Director Aaron Wudrick says you shouldn’t get to keep your expense account, especially when it leaves taxpayers on the hook for up to $206,000 a year for life.
The petition was signed by more than 200,000 Canadians.
Wudrick says former governor general Adrienne Clarkson has billed taxpayers more than $1.1-million in expenses since leaving office in 2005.
He adds that Julie Payette, who resigned her post earlier this year following reports of workplace harassment, remains eligible for all taxpayer-funded perks available to retired vice-regals.
