Saskatchewan is going to be the first jurisdiction in Canada to offer online training for Class 1 drivers.

Starting March 29th, the classroom portion of the mandatory entry level training that is needed in order to get a Class 1 license in this province, will be available online.

In Saskatchewan, drivers must complete 121.5 hours of training and that training includes 47 hours of classroom learning which, as of the end of the month, can be done on line or in person. Drivers must also undertake 17.5 hours of training in yard and 57 hours of training behind the wheel which are obviously done in person.

SGI’s online model follows the same curriculum as the in person classroom training but it allows those trying to obtain their Class 1 to do it at their own pace.

And a reminder that as of March 1st the “F” endorsement for those with an F-plated Class 1 vehicle no longer exists and those who held an “F” endorsement now has to complete the 121.5 hours of training to continue to operate a Class 1 vehicle.  SGI says there were  54 F endorsement holders when the F endorsement expired on March 1, 2021.

Temporary foreign workers are no longer able to operate a Class 1 vehicle with their existing out of country license.

SGI says drivers who come from a country where Saskatchewan has a reciprocal licensing agreement will be able to challenge the Class 1 written and practical exams without completing training if they can prove five years of Class 1 driving experience.   If they come from a country that doesn’t have a reciprocal agreement, they must complete the mandatory entry level training before attempting the Class 1 exams.
