The Saskatoon Fire Department was called out to what was originally thought to be a dumpster fire on Sunday morning.

At 6:51 a.m. the Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a report of a deck on fire, on Howell Avenue in the Hudson Bay Park area.  Three engines, a rescue engine, an aerial truck and the Battalion Chief were dispatched.  On arrival, the Fire Officer reported that a dumpster against the outside of a home was on fire.  The fire was brought under control at 07:03 a.m. and the Fire Investigator was dispatched.

A Fire Investigator has concluded the cause and origin examination of the fire was not a dumpster that had caught on fire but a bag of clothing against the single family dwelling unit. The cause was improper disposal of smoking material with $5000 damage to the structure.

The Saskatoon Fire Department wants to send out a friendly reminder to use an appropriate receptacle for smoking material.  Reduce the risk of fire by using a non-combustible container with an appropriate lid and place in a location away from combustibles.
