Two nights of Saskatchewan performing artists and multicultural storytelling will be available online this month with the return of Winterruption.
Broadway Theatre Executive and Artistic Director, Kirby Wirchenko says last year in January Winterruption saw nearly 8,000 people enjoy live shows in Saskatoon, and while that can’t happen in 2021 due to the pandemic, they will be webcasting 6 live performers and 6 storytellers over the two nights. Wirchenko says people who want to engage in art an culture will find a mix of musical acts, poets and storytellers from Metis, First Nation and New Canadian communities .

Wirchenko says for the first time in 6 years of Winterruption all artists are from Saskatchewan. It will also be a chance for the Broadway Theatre to support the artists, who have been missing out on live shows during the pandemic. He explains they have been able guarantee above scale pay and a bonus of 85% of ticket proceeds.

Winterruption will take place March 26th and 27th.

Musical headliners and artists the first night include the doom wop group the Garrys, songwriter Ellen Froese and poet Peace Akintade.

The second night will feature folk duo Kacy and Clayton, hip hop artist EEKWOL and singer-songwriter Jake White.

Wirchenko says public support at a recent fall fundraiser for the Broadway Theatre was humbling, as their goal was more than doubled. He states in a normal year, the theatre hosts over 80,000 patrons, and Winterruption at Home is way to pay back the people who provided that support and to pay artists and technicians. Wirchenko hopes people see it as a bright spot of more of that to come.
