A Saskatchewan company hopes to build Canada’s first geo-thermal power plant. DEEP Earth Energy Production Corporation is drilling and field testing near Torquay in the southeast part of the province. President and C-E-O Kirsten Marcia says they are essentially mining for heat. She says the first well is being used to see if crews can move liquid quickly enough to get heat to surface. Once on the surface, turbines will be used to convert the heat to power. The company is planning to drill a production well in September with testing to continue for the rest of the year. Marcia says a construction plan is slated for 2020. The plant could supply power for between 5-and-10 thousand households.
