The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to multiple vehicle accidents on Saturday

At 12:09 p.m. the Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a collision at Avenue C & 22nd Street. On arrival, it was determined that one passenger required extrication. Firefighters removed the door and one person was transferred to ambulance service.

At 1:26 p.m. firefighters responded to a call for a single vehicle accident at Circle Drive & Preston Ave South. Two engines, one rescue engine and the Battalion Chief were dispatched. The fire department reports no entrapment and injuries occurred as a result of this accident.

At 2:22 p.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department was requested to investigate an extinguished fire in the 200 Block of Sylvian Way.  Due to the extent of damage, a Fire Investigator was dispatched to conduct a scene examination for the cause and origin of fire. The fire started on a deck and caught the exterior siding on fire as well.  Residents extinguished the fire with a garden hose and fire extinguisher.  The Fire Investigator determined that the fire started from smoking material being placed in a planter with peat moss as a disposal receptacle which caught fire.  There were no injuries but $10,000 damage to the property occurred

The Saskatoon Fire Department is encouraging residents to use an appropriate receptacle for disposing of smoking material.  Non-combustible containers such as a glass jar, with water and an appropriate lid to submerge and wet the smoking material is an example of an appropriate receptacle.  Peat moss and planters are discouraged as a disposal receptacle as peat moss in the soil can be quite dry and readily ignitable.
