On Thursday, the Nature Conservancy of Canada is doing a national presentation on Prairie Community Pastures and why these native grasslands play an important role in the western economy and are a large part of Canada’s identity.

In Saskatchewan and Manitoba, there are 141 Community Pastures that cover an area twice the size of Prince Edward Island and support bird and plant species at risk. NCC says good management of these lands contributes to biodiversity, water quality, soil conservation, and storing carbon which helps in the fight against climate change.

The organization says native grasslands are the most endangered ecosystem on the planet.
