Saskatchewan Health Authority has been made aware of a further delay impacting their next expected shipment of 19,300 Moderna vaccines. The delay stems from the manufacturer.
Some appointments already booked in primarily rural and northern clinics will be impacted. The SHA is still assessing the full impact. More information is expected in the coming days and the SHA will notify impacted patients directly next week and reschedule their appointments. In the interim, no action is required from patients.
As the third wave of COVID-19 continues to grip Saskatchewan, the province says the only way to beat the virus is with vaccines.
With over 234,000 vaccines administered, Health Minister Paul Merriman says the end of the pandemic is in sight.
Despite variant cases of COVID-19 continuing to rise, Merriman says the province isn’t considering stronger health restrictions. he says they are working, except for Regina which is where the restrictions were increased.
Current health measures in place in Regina have been extended until April 26th.
The Saskatchewan Medical Association is calling on the province to vaccinate all essential workers, physicians and health care workers.
A news release from the SMA states that the government’s refusal to immediately vaccinate essential workers and health care workers who haven’t yet received their shots will result in more lives lost lost and long-term illness.
The SMA adds not vaccinating both essential and health care workers will put non-COVID patients at even greater risk given delays in the services and care they need.
SMA President, Dr. Barb Konstantynowicz says she has advised Health Minister Paul Merriman on the need to vaccinate all physicians and health workers.
She adds “we need to use all opportunities in the battle against COVID-19 and it variants of concern wisely.”
