SGEU is speaking out once again about their displeasure with the provincial government’s vaccine rollout.

A news release from the union states that they’re concerned for correctional workers after another COVID-19 outbreak occurred at the Regina Correctional Centre this week.

The union says the government’s original rollout plan did not follow the advice of health experts who recommended that correctional facilities be included in phase 2 given that the facilities are deemed as “shared living settings”.

Instead, correctional workers were included in the same-age based vaccination plan as the general public.

Now, with the government changing the vaccine plan to inoculate some police officers, other first responders and workers at pharmacies and grocery stores, SGEU is unpleased with the government’s decision not to vaccinate workers at correctional centres and young offender facilities.

Barry Nowoselsky, chair of the SGEU Public Service/General Employment bargaining unit says “There is simpy no good reason for the government to ignore correctional officers and young offender facilities workers in the vaccine rollout.”

As of Tuesday, there were 70 active cases at the Regina Correctional Centre with 57 inmates and 13 staff.
