Nuclear energy is looking like more of an option in Canada.
There is now a fourth province joining the team to collaborate on the advancement of small modular reactors as a clean energy option.
Alberta has signed on to the MOU previously signed by Saskatchewan, Ontario and New Brunswick.
An SMR Feasibility Study conducted by the power companies in the three original provinces concludes that the development of SMRs would support domestic energy needs, curb greenhouse gas emissions, and position Canada as a global leader in this emerging technology.
SMRs can support large established grids, small grids, remote off-grid communities and resource projects.
The proposed first SMR project cited in the report would be at the Darlington nuclear site in Ontario by 2028, followed by units in Saskatchewan, with the first SMR projected in this province in 2032, and projects in the other provinces to follow.
Premier Scott Moe says this announcement confirms the commitment of these four provinces to advancing SMRs as a clean energy option.
He believes this new technology will attract investment, create high-skilled jobs and contribute to Saskatchewan’s growing economy.
