The provincial NDP believes the SskParty government has reneged on an election promise.
Seniors’ Critic, Matt Love, says the government promised to hire 300 Continuing Care Aides to help out the hard-hit long-term care sector.
Love notes that the SaskParty announced the CCAs would be included at a cost of $18.4-million for all four years of their mandate, but the Seniors’ Critic says the annual budget cut the commitment by two-thirds, allocating only $6-million for 90 continuing care aides in long term care and 18 in homecare.
Love says at a committee meeting on Wednesday night he asked the Seniors Minister, Everett Hindley, why less money was allotted.
His answer, Love says, is that the CCAs promised on the campaign trail were intended to backfill existing staff shortages and no staff were added as part of the COVID-19 response.
