So far, it’s looking promising for the COVID-19 vaccine from VIDO on the University of Saskatchewan campus.
Director and CEO of the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization, Volker Gerdts, says Phase One testing includes three small groups of human trials and they are in the middle of the second group right now while moving ahead with the last group.
Phase Two would be a larger trial with hundreds of volunteers.
He notes that everything is on track and on schedule and he looks forward to a day when the vaccine can be delivered to Canadians.
VIDO has upped the sequence of the vaccine to adjust the new U.K. and South African variants.
Gerdts says the timeline if all goes well is still a few months out.
He stresses you don’t want to cut any corners on safety assessments and says VIDO is working closely with Health Canada to ensure everything is done as quickly as possible.
The clinical trials are being done at the Canadian Center for Vaccinology in Halifax.
