The Saskatoon Fire Department battled two fires at Saskatoon homes on Saturday.

The first occurred at approximately 12:30 that afternoon when the Fire Department received several 911 calls reporting a detached garage on fire located in the 1500 block of Lancaster Boulevard.  En-route, fire crews were able to confirm heavy black smoke in the Montgomery neighbourhood.  Fire fighters found the single detached garage fully involved in fire, overhead power lines arcing and the danger of fire spreading to a neighbouring home.  Fire crews were able to prevent the spread of fire while being mindful of the downed power line, and then began to put out the rest of the garage.  Additional fire staff shut off the main electrical breaker and natural gas supply to the home.  Saskatoon Light and Power as well SaskEnergy were contacted to attend.

The fire was brought under control within 14 minutes of the first arriving firefighters.  One man received minor burns resulting from the fire and was assisted by ambulance paramedics on scene.  A Fire Investigator concluded the cause of the fire was accidental due to welding being performed. Damage is estimated at $100,000.

Then at approximately 7:48 p.m. dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting a house on fire at Leland Place. It was reported that there was possibly occupants with disabilities unable to exit. Fire crews arrived and were able to knock down the flames prior to making entry.  Firefighters report all occupants were able to get out of the house prior to their arrival. Crews remained on scene extinguishing hot spots and a Fire Investigator was called out.  An update on cause, origin and damage estimate will be provided at a later time.
