A radiothon being broadcast across the province will look to keep STARS Air Ambulance flying, by raising critical funds for base operations.
The first-ever STARS Air Ambulance radiothon hits the airwaves Wednesday, and Director of Donor Relations and Development, Jeri-Lynn Johnston says it’s an opportunity to connect with the people of the province and raise funds in a safe way during the pandemic. She suggests STARS can’t do what they do without the support of the community, and is built by the community for the community. Johnston explains STARS flies two to three missions a day in the province and on average 800 missions per year.
Johnston explains funds raised will stay in Saskatchewan, as it costs about $10.5 million to run each base in the province.
There are two bases, one in Regina and one in Saskatoon, and while the province provides about half the amount needed to operate, the STARS Foundation must raise the rest each year. Johnston says this years funds will also go towards two cardiac monitors for STARS helicopters.
The first ever Critical Care in the Air radiothon will include stories from some of STARS Very Important Patients, as well as STARS crew members and foundation members. Johnston says GMS will be matching donations up to $50,000.
The radiothon goes until 6 p.m. on Thursday.
