The C-F-L has set a new targeted starting date for the 2021 season of August 5 and has also re-scheduled the Grey Cup to December 12.

In making the announcement Wednesday morning, the league added the 2021 campaign will also be reduced from 18 games to 14 games. The August 5 start is nearly two months later than originally planned while the Grey Cup was to have been played November 21 in Hamilton. The C-F-L campaign was slated to open June 10 with each team playing a full 18-game regular season after the league cancelled the 2020 season due to the global pandemic. Training camps were to open in mid-May with the first exhibition contest slated for May 23. But, with Canada dealing with a third wave, the C-F-L board of governors decided Tuesday to push back the start of the 2021 season and reduce the schedule. The league did stop short of committing to play without governments lifting restrictions on fans attending games, which means by mid-June, the C-F-L will need to determine whether its new start date is possible.
