SaskPower announced Thursday it will lower green house gas emissions by 50 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030.

The commitment to reduce emissions from power production came on the heels of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will enhance its emissions reduction target by 40 to 45% below 2005 levels, by 2030.

The updated forecast exceeds the commitment made by SaskPower in 2015 to reduce emissions by 40 per cent in the same period.

Minister responsible for the Crown Corporation, Don Morgan, says, “This positive forecast is a strong indicator that SaskPower’s investments in renewables and lower-carbon baseload power are paying off.”

SaskPower says its green house gas emissions for 2020 are approximately 20 per cent lower than 2019 and 10 per cent lower than the 2005 benchmark even though the load has increased more than 25 per cent since 2005.
