The Saskatoon Police Service Economic Crime Unit is alerting everyone to be aware of a scam that targets seniors.
Police say fraudsters working in a group of two or more target seniors shopping at big box stores, strip malls or businesses with large parking lots.
As the victim pays for their purchase, the fraudsters try to figure out their pin number as they wait behind them.
Then, when the victim has left the store, they are approached, being told they have dropped money or a card from their wallet.
When the victim opens their wallet to check, the fraudsters bombard them with questions and concerns, creating a distracting situation where the suspects are able to remove the card from the person’s wallet.
They then quickly purchase gift cards from stores and make cash withdrawals at banks.
In some cases, as many as three or four different people from the same group will make these consecutive purchases and withdrawals until the card is shut down.
