The Meadowgreen Recycling will close permanently after a decision from city Council.
Lynne Lacroix, General Manager of Community Services says the actions of some individuals have led to the closure and unfortunately the city can no longer commit to the resources required to maintain the site, keep residents safe and uphold the appearance of the lanes adjacent to the depot.
The city says the depot located at 22nd Street & Whitney Avenue, has had continuous public safety concerns tied to illegal dumping, scavenging, nuisance and criminal behavior.
At the end of March the city decided to add security surveillance at all times along with reducing the hours of operation from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. However, issues have remained.
The city will now block access to the site, remove all recycle bins and clean up spillage that has occurred on asphalt. Work that is estimated will cost $8,000. Consultation with the community on how to possibly redevelop the area is expected in the future.
