Severe storms July 13 to 15 and on July 30th caused over $130 million in insured damage in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba. Nearly two-thirds was to personal property with the rest of the losses impacting commercial property and autos. There was significant hail, wind and water damage with 102 km/h wind gusts and 68mm of rain. Celyeste Power of the Insurance Bureau of Canada says, “Western Canada was impacted by several storms this past summer, but these two stand out in terms of catastrophic losses suffered.” She says severe, unpredictable weather is becoming more frequent, resulting in higher costs to homeowners, insurers, and governments. Last year, insured damage from severe weather across Canada exceeded $2 billion. So far this year, close to $900 million in insured loses has been recorded.
