MADD Canada says its mobile “Impaired Driver Caught Here” signs will continue to appear in communities across the province for a second year. It’s part of an awareness initiative with police services and Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI).
The signs are placed at locations where police have pulled over and criminally charged impaired drivers. MADD says many of those apprehensions happened as a result of people calling 911 to report suspected impaired drivers. The signs are moved to new locations every other week, based on new impaired driving charges. The program is currently operating in Estevan, Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert.
“No one ever thinks that they’ll be impacted by impaired driving, but these signs show people that this crime can happens at any time and in any place, including in their community,” said Bonny Stevenson, President of MADD Saskatoon. “We hope the signs encourage people to call 911 when they see a suspected impaired driver, and we also hope they serve as a strong deterrence message to anyone who thinks they can ignore the law and drive impaired.”
MADD says the mobile signs highlight the effectiveness of Saskatchewan’s Report Impaired Drivers (RID) program, which encourages the public to call 911 if they see a driver they suspect is impaired.
MADD Canada, police services across Saskatchewan and SGI encourage the public to:
- Never drive impaired. Plan ahead for a sober ride home – book an Uber, call a cab or designated driving service, take public transit or arrange a designated driver.
- Never accept a ride from a driver who may be impaired.
- Call 911 if you see a driver you suspect is impaired.
