The NDP is calling for stiffer penalties for protesters against the public health orders in Saskatchewan.

NDP deputy leader Nicole Sarauer says protest organizers should face a fine of $10,000, not $2,800.  Justice minister Gordon Wyant says significant penalties are in place, adding he has faith in law enforcement to ensure the law is upheld.

The NDP report that amendments to introduce stronger fines, for those breaking provincial health orders around mass gatherings, were blocked by the Sask. Party this weekend.  Sarauer, proposed a specific offense for organizing a protest in contravention of public health measures with a fine no less than $10,000.

Sarauer says creating serious implications to public health should result in serious consequences, she adds organizing mass demonstrations like the ones we have seen across the province put us all at risk.  The NDP criticized the province saying the government is aware that these types of events are being organized by a small, consistent group who continue to put public health at risk. The NPD claim despite pleas from Saskatchewan officials and COVID patients for stronger enforcement, it appears serious penalties are of no interest to the Sask. Party.
