A multi-million dollar settlement between the federal government and the Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation has been increased. Last January, the First Nation was awarded a little over $126.9 million for the unlawful surrender of over 14 thousand acres of land in 1905. The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations says this was the largest award ever made by the Specific Claims Tribunal of Canada. However, the FSIN says, the expert studies of all parties supported a much higher amount. In March, the amount was adjusted to $141 million plus interest.
According to the 2016 census, the First Nation, south of North Battleford, has a population in private households by Aboriginal identity of 545.
