If you had a vehicle registered with SGI between 2018 and 2020, your cheque is in the mail, or it will be shortly. Chief Financial Officer Jeff Stepan says about 709,000 rebate cheques are being mailed out over the next few weeks and the average rebate per recipient is $380. This is because of an excess in the Auto Fund. He explains that when that happens they can either reduce premiums or mail out rebate cheques.
Smaller rebates were handed out for 2006 at an average of $185 and at an average of $84 for 2005. Stepan says the excess in the Auto Fund was because of strong performance in their investments, although a good winter with fewer accidents and fewer people on the road during the lockdown also contributed.
A total of $285-million is being issued in rebates, from 1.74-million vehicles, motorcycles, trailers and snowmobiles that were registered at some point between 2018 and 2020.
SGI advises customers to ensure their address is up-to-date. If you haven’t received your rebate by the end of June, you can call SGI’s Customer Service Centre at 1-844-TLK-2SGI (1-844-855-2744).
Minister Responsible for SGI, Don Morgan, says “These rebates will provide a significant injection into the provincial economy, at a time when it will certainly be a welcome boost.”
