The provincial government hopes to have the transition to a provincial firearms program underway by the end of September. That’s according to Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Christine Tell, who says since last spring, they have been working with the federal government to establish provincial oversight on firearms legislation.

Back in 1998, when The Firearms Act was introduced, five provinces chose to manage the Canadian Firearms Program provincially, and now Saskatchewan will join them. Last August, the province hired Robert Freberg as the Chief Firearms Officer designate.

The provincial government says in a news release it continues to oppose the federal government’s firearm control measures, including Bill C-21, which will do little to impact firearm-related crime, and unfairly targets law abiding firearms owners.
