Monday’s Governance and Priorities Committee, which includes all Saskatoon city council members, will review a report on Curbside Organics Collection.

Saskatoon originally had an optional organics program but is moving to a mandatory initiative by 2023. The processing contract has been awarded and signed and administration is moving to present council with next steps for method of collection. That includes making choices about picking up front street, rear lane or a combination thereof.

Since the existing subscription based organics program came into effect in 2019 with 9,700 customers, it grew to over 11,000 in 2020.

In terms of input impact, right now there are 11 additional collections operators used to support weekly garbage collection and bi-weekly subscription organics collection during the summer.

Further options will be presented in June as Administration seeks direction from City Council, which is needed prior to mid-20201 due to budget implications, in order to implement the program for April 2023.
