Statistics Canada says the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.4% on a year-over-year basis in April, up from a 2.2% gain in March. A significant proportion of this increase was attributable to a steep decline in prices in April 2020, as the monthly CPI rose 0.5% in April 2021.
The year-over-year growth in April rose at its fastest pace since May 2011 amid the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, mostly because prices fell sharply during the early months of the pandemic.
In Saskatchewan, the month to month increase was 0.4 per cent. Only British Columbia was lower at 0.2. Year to year, the CPI rose here by 3.7 per cent. Four provinces had bigger increases.
