A total of nine overdoses have taken place in Saskatoon since September 8th, five of which took place within a 30 hour period on Friday and Saturday.

Out of the five on the weekend, one resulted in the death of a woman according to Superintendant Dave Haye. Haye reminds about the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act.

He says the act comes with certain protections one of which is you won’t be charged with possession of the drug.

“People who encounter a victim of a drug overdose or are drug overdosing themselves, contact emergency medical services immediately, dial 9-1-1, get people to help you.” says Haye.

The overdoses took place in various areas throughout the city and that fentanyl and heroin have been linked to five out of the nine incidents.

Police don’t yet know the substance that was used in the one death in the five weekend overdoses.

Haye says the death investigation is a coroners file and will be with the coroner until toxicology is done, once that’s complete the SPS will decide what they’ll do next in their investigation.
