Despite surges in case numbers in places like Manitoba, Canada’s COVID-19 counts continue to go down.
Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam says recent data showing fewer that 5 thousand new cases daily, is 40% lower that in April. The number of people suffering severe and critical illness is also decreasing, as overall infection rates come down. The latest seven-day average for the number of people with COVID-19 being treated in a hospital has dropped by 20 per cent since peak activity.
The federal government is sending additional resources to Manitoba, where high numbers of infections continue being reported. The province is struggling with its third wave of the pandemic. Manitoba will be getting additional staff through the Red Cross, and the Canadian Armed Forces.
The Armed Forces will support vaccine rollout in 23 Indigenous communities. The feds are also providing 50 additional interviewers for contact tracing.
