Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam says infection rates have peaked in most areas, and are starting to decline, with fewer people in hospital. However, she says where infection rates are still high, such as in Manitoba, hospitalization rates have not started to drop.
Tam says those numbers will continue to trail off, but only if people get vaccinated and adhere to public safety guidelines.
Health Minister Patty Hajdu says average case counts in Canada are less than half of what they were in mid-April. As well, the number of people in intensive care is going down.
As of Thursday, a total of more than 23 million vaccine doses had arrived, and 22 million had been administered.
Procurement Minister Anita Anand says between now and the end of June, another 15 million doses are scheduled to arrive.
