A concept design has been revealed for Saskatoon’s upcoming Central Library.
A media release from the Saskatoon Public Library notes the building’s concept draws inspiration from traditional First Nation and Metis architecture. The exterior of the building references the First Nation Tipi while the interior will represent the Metis log cabin. A Concept Design Report includes sketches of the exterior and interior of the building, but SPL says the design will continue to evolve as the process continues.
The schematic design phase will now begin, this phase will focus on the interior of the building and SPL will gather public input during consultation scheduled for June 1st to the 25th on it’s website. The ideas received will help the design team develop floor plans, along with individual room characteristics and requirements. During that time 14 resident advisory committees are also expected to meet and provide input.
The new central library will be located at 321 2nd Avenue North and will open in 2026, it is estimated to cost around $73.3 million.
