As of June 1st, the province’s Insulin Pump Program provides coverage to anyone with Type 1 diabetes who meets specific criteria. There is also coverage for the Continuous and Flash Glucose Monitors, for children and youth under 18. This support was originally announced in the budget in April with a $5-million investment to expand supports for people with diabetes and lessen the financial burden for families dealing and living with diabetes.
Diabetes Canada calls insulin pumps an alternative technology to multiple daily insulin injections, which can offer better control of blood sugar levels. The organization describes continuous glucose monitors as a small sensor under the skin which measures blood sugar every few minutes, while with flash glucose monitoring, you only get a reading when you scan the sensor. This replaces pricking your finger and testing blood manually numerous times a day.
