The provincial government believes it is making progress with climate resilience. The third annual report includes updates on 25 measures of resilience, which is defined as the ability to cope with, adapt to and recover from climate-related stress and change.
The report states that almost 26 per cent of the province’s electricity came from renewable energy sources, which is a 1.6 per cent increase since 2019.
One of the measurements that didn’t reach its target was maintaining the accumulation of soil organic matter in cultivated land at 5.6-million tonnes. In 2019, cultivated areas accumulated 4.1-million tonnes of soil organic matter. The report states that improvements in production practices, including zero-till and reduced summer fallow, has supported farmers in adding organic matter to the soil every year.
The target for 2020 for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in provincial buildings was surpassed. The goal was just under 1.5 gigajoules per square metre and the final total was approximately 1.2 gigajoules.
Environment Minister Warren Kaeding says the majority of the measures are in good standing with none in the category labelled “poor”.
