The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is calling on federal government to provide emergency funding for inter-community passenger bus services.

A resolution made by the FCM calls for funding to be made available to providers as early as the summer and says there is an urgent need for it. The resolution also calls on the government to come up with and implement a long-term plan for inter-community passenger bus services. The FCM says this resolution was in response to the recent closures or reductions of regional buss routes across the country, including Greyhound Canada. The FCM says passenger bus services are critical for local and national economies , and for maintaining a vibrant and flourishing rural Canada.

The FCM also states these systems are integral to a transit network that is equitable and accessible, as they are disproportionately used by women, Indigenous people, students, seniors and people with disabilities.

The FCM states inter-community bus services must be part of a vital mix of transportation options for Canadians.
