Extreme heat warnings have prompted the Saskatoon Housing Initiatives Partnership to once again issue a reminder about cool down locations in the city.  Citizens and businesses are asked to be on the look out for the city’s most vulnerable which includes those without homes or access to water. A strategy was devised after the extreme heat waves during the summer of 2018. Priscilla Johnstone, SHIP”s Homelessness Action Plan Manager says, “COVID-reality has put all of us into a place of uncertainty: but also shown great strength and resiliency from the grassroots level to care for society’s most vulnerable. We all need to look out for our neighbours.”

Hot weather Alert 1 is when the temperature reaches 30°C or greater; Monday and Tuesday of this week are predicted to reach a Hot Weather Alert 3a with higher than 32°C temperatures, so the focus is on water bottle distribution and an indoor cooling location if needed.

About half of Saskatchewan including areas around Saskatoon and Prince Albert are under a heat warning. Environment Canada says building heat over the western Prairies will bring high temperatures in the low to mid-30s and warm overnight lows to parts of Saskatchewan.

The forecast temperatures are about 10 degrees warmer than seasonal normals and may break high temperature records. This heat will be in place for Monday and Tuesday. A cold front will move across the province on Tuesday night, bringing a risk of thunderstorms.
