The Saskatoon Fire Department says at about 3:10 this morning (tues), multiple 911 calls came in, reporting a fire at an apartment building on Pawlychenko Lane.
Fire crews were met with thick smoke coming from the overhead door of the parkade. Evacuation by vehicles and tenants was already in progress.
They found a fire in a storage closet with the sprinkler system activated. Firefighters brought the fire under control in minutes.
Smoke was reported on all 3 levels of the apartment building. Firefighters ventilated the building. Tenants were allowed to return to their suites at 5:00 a.m.
Spontaneous combustion in the storage closet due to improperly stored chemicals was the cause. Hazmat technicians secured the chemicals and removed them safely from the building.
Damage is estimated to be $25,000.
There were no injuries.
