Following use of a taser on a 51-year-old man outside a Saskatoon restaurant on the evening of June 23, the Saskatoon Police Service is seeking investigative assistance from the Regina Police Service and the province in reviewing the incident.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Wednesday, the S-P-S was told of a male wanted on warrants who was seen leaving a residence in the 500 block of Avenue F South on a bicycle and wearing a black and white shirt. When officers spotted the man a short time and distance away, he refused to stop, eventually abandoning the bicycle on Avenue A and entered a nearby restaurant on foot. When confronted by a pursuing officer in the restaurant’s kitchen, the man said he had a firearm and exited the back door where more officers were waiting. The man then reached into the back of his shorts, threatening to shoot, when one officer used a taser. The man fell and injured himself, requiring Medavie Health Services to arrive on scene and transport him to Royal University Hospital where he is in stable condition. Because of the man’s injuries, the Saskatoon Police Service want a review of in-car camera video as it was determined the man was not the same one Police were seeking. However, he was found to be wanted on outstanding warrants for assault with a weapon as well as break and enter. The S-P-S’s Use of Force Committee will also review the incident internally.
