The Saskatoon Police Service says they are expecting there to be marches and gatherings in Friendship Park and Kiwanis Memorial Park Canada Day.  A news release issued by Chokecherry Studios says Saskatoon youth are cancelling Canada Day and will gather at Kiwanis Memorial Park to lead a Smudge Walk which is described as a collaborative action with several other grassroots groups “to honour, mourn, remember and heal the community through prayer and unity”.  There will be a candlelight vigil at 9:30 p.m. tonight again starting at Kiwanis Park spanning across the Broadway Bridge that is intended to not only remember all missing Indigenous children but show support for the efforts of Indigenous communities who are discovering or planning explorations for former residential school sites.  The Saskatoon Police Service says they have been in contact with organizers and say the march is expected to go from Spadina Crescent East & 20th Street East to Idylwyld Drive North. The group will travel north on Idylwyld Drive to 22nd Street East, then eastbound to return to the park. Traffic restrictions will be in place along the route, as well as on Spadina Crescent East from 3rd Avenue South to 21st Street East. Events will begin at 8:00 a.m. and last until approximately 9:00 p.m. Police will be on hand to aid with traffic restrictions and public safety and send the request for anyone taking part to stay safe in the extreme heat while abiding by current public health restrictions.
