Deer, the American badger, loggerhead shrike, downy woodpecker, mountain bluebird and the northern leopard frog – these are some of the at-risk species that call NCC’s Asquith conservation area home.
Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Saskatoon Nature Society have partnered on a new trail near the town of Asquith, about 45 minutes from Saskatoon.
NCC spokesperson, Kayla Burak, says they have over 1,300 acres of conservation area near the town, and this six kilometre trail is part of that.
She describes it as an easy to moderate trail which is mowed, marked, and includes interpretive signs.
The area includes sand dunes, stabilized by trembling aspen and creeping juniper, which is home to at-risk flora and fauna.
Burak explains that Saskatchewan’s native grasslands are among the rarest and most at-risk habitats in the world.
Burak hopes people will get out in nature to explore and recharge.
