An officer with the Waskesiu R-C-M-P Detachment has surrendered his firearm and faces a charge for having the license for the firearm expire while it was still in his possession.

Sargeant Rene Giroux has been charged with one count of unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm and will appear in Montreal Lake Cree Court Nation on September 2. Back on January 28, the Saskatchewan R-C-M-P’s North District Management Team received information that led them to check Sargeant Giroux’s .22-calibre pistol that he owned. It was found the officer’s personal firearms license had expired. Sargeant Giroux remains on active duty with an internal Code of Conduct review is underway. Since ownership of the .22-calibre pistol wasn’t related to Sargeant Giroux’s policing duties, on-duty possession of a firearm doesn’t require a personal firearms license.
