Statistics Canada’s annual crime rate report indicates the cities with the highest violent crime severity indexes in 2020 were Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Regina and Saskatoon. Winnipeg’s is the highest of the four with an index of 154.8 and Saskatoon’s is the lowest at 119.9. However, Saskatoon’s total crime severity index is down 10 per cent from 2019. Regina’s is down 20 per cent.

Saskatoon’s violent crime severity index has decreased by 13 per cent and the non-violent crime severity index and lowered by ten per cent, while Regina’s violent crime index is down 5 per cent and the non-violent crime severity index is down 26 per cent. In Saskatchewan, the CSI fell six per cent.

Statistics Canada’s 2020 Crime Severity Index shows a decrease in both violent and non-violent crimes in Prince Albert, ranking the city 7th overall for cities with a population of more than 10,000 people. The Prince Albert Police Service notes that the community is ranked 5th in violent crime for 2020, which is an improvement from being ranked third the previous year.

Police chief Jonathan Bergen says the numbers represent the lowest overall ranking and lowest non-violent ranking for Prince Albert in ten years, and violent crime is at its second lowest level in the last decade.
