Jason Holtvogt of Humboldt began his marathon Friday night at 8 p.m. and he continues through the weekend raising funds to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.
Holdtvogt is running four miles every four hours, and his last run will begin at 4 pm on Sunday. He jokes that by then it could take him the whole four hours to do the run. He isn’t sure how much he will be able to sleep in between each run.
Holtvogt says finding a cure is close to his heart. He explains that his brother-in-law was diagnosed when he was 17 and his daughter Aubree was diagnosed in 2018 at the age of four. She just had her three year anniversary of being diagnosed, which Holdtvogt says is something they celebrate as a family to recognize how tough she is to be able to manage diabetes on a day-to-day basis. That’s why he chose a marathon as a fundraiser. He says having diabetes is a marathon that never ends.
Holtvogt is a member of the Humboldt and Area Team T1D, which is a collection of almost 40 families who are affected by diabetes.
Funds from this marathon are going to DRIFCan, a research organization in Edmonton. Holtvogt says Dr. James Shapiro has been making ground-breaking strides towards a cure for Type 1 Diabetes, and is raising money to conduct human trials for his research.
