Canada Mortgage and Housing says the trend in housing starts was about 286.6 thousand units in July, down from about 293 thousand in June. This trend measure is a six-month moving average of the monthly seasonally adjusted annual rates (SAAR) of housing starts.
Bob Dugan, CMHC’s chief economist says this downward trend reflects the recent moderation in total starts from the highs recorded earlier in the year.
However, the level of activity remains elevated by historical standards, both on a trend and monthly seasonally adjusted basis.
In Saskatchewan, there were 213 starts in centres with a population of ten thousand and over. That’s a drop of 69 per cent from the year before.
In the Saskatoon Metropolitan Area, there were 131 starts, a decrease of 78 per cent from the year before.
