The Saskatoon Police Service is looking to update its fleet of CEWs, commonly referred to as tasers. A report heading to the Board of Police Commissioners meeting Thursday states that the police service currently uses two different models of CEWs, the X-26 and the X-26P. As of December 2019, the manufacturer for the two models no-longer provides support for repairs or battery replacements.
The estimated cost for the refresh to the Taser 7 CEWs is $1,065,000 and it’s proposed that the cost be spread out over five years. The manufacturer is offering a buy-back program which would save over $50 thousand if the police service can commit to purchasing the new tasers by the end of September.
The recommendation is that the board recommends to City Council the post-budget adjustment be approved in order to save $50,500 through the buy-back program. Thursday’s meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m.
