The Saskatoon Police Service will not be continuing the Strengthening Families Program after the end of this year.
Through this 14 week early intervention program, families with high risk children and youth are encouraged to participate to reduce problem behaviours, delinquency and alcohol and drug abuse.
A recent report to the Board of Police Commissioners states that the funding was through the National Crime Prevention Strategy and it’s done at the end of October.
The Police Service will continue the funding until the end of the year.
The report says that less than half of the participating families finish the 14 weeks, but there were some positives.
There was a noticeable decrease in contact with the police after participants had completed the program.
The Police Service is optimistic another program can be found which will have a greater impact.
