Both the Saskatoon Public School and Catholic School divisions released their plans for a safe start to the school year, taking into consideration COVID-19 and the highly infectious Delta variant.
Director of Education for Saskatoon Public Schools, Shane Skjerven, says when school resumes on September 1st, all elementary schools and collegiates will offer in-class learning with safety protocols in place. Masks are required for elementary schools and are strongly recommended for collegiates. Skjerven notes that high school students are eligible to be vaccinated and he believes vaccination is the way out of the pandemic.
There will also be daily personal health screening, which Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools will also be enacting. Saskatoon Public Schools collegiates will move to a quarter system instead of semesters to reduce contact. It means having three classes a day for a quarter of the year, instead of five for a semester. Extra curricular activities will resume.
Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools says its plan has 4 levels and the year will begin at level 2. Level 1 is full in class learning. Level 2 is full in class learning with additional protocols such as use of masks and having student cohorts. Level 3 is a combination of online and in class learning and level 4 is education completely online.
For both school divisions, online learning is an option.
