Environment Canada has issued a weather advisory for a western section of the province that includes Kindersley, Rosetown, Biggar and further north to the Battlefords, Unit and Maidstone and surrounding areas. There could be funnel clouds today (Fri) in these areas. Environment Canada says funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under thunderstorms, and the rotation is normally not a danger near the ground, but there is a chance it could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado. These types of tornadoes don’t usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous and can topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris.
Further north and to the east, there is an air quality statement for La Ronge, Waskesiu, Pelican Narrows, Cumberland House and further north to Southend and Brabant Lake. Smoke from wildfires is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility in northeastern Saskatchewan. Air quality and visibility are expected to remain poor through the weekend. However, they will fluctuate as rain moves into the region from the south today.
